The Importance of Solid Waste Management

Got a plan for the 1,642.5 pounds of garbage you produce each year? The Solid Waste Management districts in northeast Indiana do. They are responsible for decreasing our dependency on landfills. That’s important, because if we keep creating trash at the rate we are now, a dump might appear in your backyard.

Solid Waste Management districts are charged with educating people and promoting the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports on its website that, nationally, only 32 percent of our trash is disposed of in the preferred way: being recovered and recycled or composted. Another 14 percent of our trash gets burned, and the largest percentage, 54 percent, finds its way to landfills.
