The Wheels on the Bus Go “Save, Save, Save …”

The first hybrid school bus was designed from the ground up by International Truck and Engine Corporation in Fort Wayne as a part of a consortium headed by Advanced Energy.

There are currently 17 buses on order with more on the way. The buses — each with a small V8 engine, 28 batteries and an electric motor — deliver a 40 to 50 percent increase in fuel efficiency, according to Bill Arick, senior finance manager for the Bus Product Center in Fort Wayne. The reduction in pollution can be up to 90 percent when a dirty old diesel bus is taken off the road.

There’s a three- to five-year payback period on the bus, which makes this a decision that could easily be calculated in a third-grade math class. That should lead any school system to get on the green bus.
