Heating and Cooling by the Earth |
by Pamela Steinbach
Geothermal systems make brilliantly simple use of the earth’s free heating and cooling. As the people at WaterFurnace say, geothermal heating and cooling is smarter from the ground up. But you don’t have to be as smart as a physicist to get the basic idea of how it works or as learned as an economist to understand how it saves money. For a start, the maintenance costs are miniscule, because the only part of a geothermal system that would ever need replacing is a small unit that compresses and sequesters the heat or cooling harvested from the constant temperature found below ground.
The brilliant part of a geothermal system, and the way it really saves you money, is through a loop of liquid piped through the earth five feet under your lawn, where it gathers a base temperature for heating or cooling. Good idea, don’t you think? |
